page one Nov. 6,1944

"Hi Lewis,
One of my buddies in the tent was showing me some pictures of his place taken before the service got him. ...one happened to catch my eye, Fran and quite naturally brought to mind a recent notation of yours... of course its the elefink. It's stuff like that that makes it tough ...to get you out of mind..."

The easiest way found so far Franie is to put your pictures away out of sight and easy reach, then go without a hat for several days."

"Speaking of animals reminds me of a couple of events...The first deals without elefinks but with an English Bulldog, you know the white ones that look so rough.  This one was old, rather droopy and fond of his booze.

Being as there was... a guy who disliked dogs a lot, the wise boys frequently deposited the old bull in his bunk, under the covers and head on the pillow.... And that bull could snore like an old grandpa and with each snore the aroma of a drunk grew stronger..."

"The other one is about a time we were in Houston for several hours. Having not a penny one , we had to resort to looking about and ran into a livestock show. Naturally there was some splendid specimens of steers. In a mixed crowd around one such we were idling by and happened to see a drunk surveying the situation. Seizing the opportunity with a loud voice the drunk made an obvious observation. ...we laughed so hard we had to hold each other up.

The old timers  usually  speak of years as short periods but to us this past couple of years made a lot of difference."

 Page four

"Especially in you as a couple of years to a gal after getting out  of school usually makes some changes so now its kinda hard to know what to say to you...Haven't  decided what to do with you yet... Oh well, shoulda known better than to start it in the first place...
Well, old bean, it's time to knock off again which is also always tough, especially to totally stop. So good luck &...goodbye,"
